Is Social Media a fad? Nov 6th '09

Social Media burst onto the Internet in the early to mid 2000′s however it has only recently become mainstream in business. Many people are still sceptical of social media and many think it is a fad, this post will help in deciding for yourself.

Being part of the ‘Generation Y‘ I have grown up with the Internet and modern technology. This was one of the main reasons why I fell in love with the Internet and decided I wanted to run a web development company. Social Media has been a very easy concept to get my head around as it is combining personal recommendations with the Internet, instantly magnifying the personal recommendations.

As I mentioned in the introduction, many people see Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) as a fad and not useful. A YouTube video which I came across asks the same question:

As the video suggests the world has changed with the introduction of Social Media. Companies have to step up their game as one complaint can spread around the world like wildfire affecting the reputation of the company, if this is you maybe its time to seek a company which can help with creating reputations. One example which springs to mind is the story of a Belgian Jewellers who received a complaint from a customer and went about it all the wrong way! Information passed around a small group of friends can quickly become viral and spread further than ever thought possible.

In answer to my question, no I don’t think Social Media is a fad, I think it is here to stay whether you think it is good or not. Ask any business owner and personal recommendations are the best way to gain new business, the Internet increases the opportunities for these recommendations.

What do you think?

Oliver,
Good Post! I agree with your answer. Traditional media is pretty much a dying breed. Companies need to realize that if they don’t get on board now with Social Media and Online Marketing, getting found will be impossible. I have a client that still takes out an ad in the Yellow Pages….Go figure.. I tell the phone book people not to bother leaving the book. I use the internet for everything.
