The need for a content management system Nov 29th '09

In principle having access to your website and being able to update the content whenever you want is brilliant and a no-brainer. However is a content management system (CMS) really the right solution for your website?

More and more clients are asking us to quote for websites which involve some sort of CMS. Whether they intend to use it to update their brochure style website every month, or blog on a weekly basis. With Social Media becoming a bigger part of everyday business life, a CMS makes sense. On the other hand what about the people who don’t want to get involved with the maintenance of the site and would rather someone else did it? A CMS wouldn’t fit their needs at all.

To match the designs we create, we use a CMS which is clean and easy to use, yet delivers on features. Sometimes this involves building a CMS from scratch for a clients particular needs and sometimes its using an off the shelf CMS such as Wordpress. The option we go down depends entirely on the users requirements and budget.

When we quote for a website we always give a few options ranging from, a CMS which has the ability to power their whole website, to monthly maintenance packages which will allow the client to email over information, day or night, and the changes will be done within 24 hours.

There is no one size fits all package, people have different needs, you don’t always NEED a CMS, however if you intend on making more than a few changes a month it becomes more cost effective to have one added.
