We had our theme designed for us and the designers, an established web design team, continue to maintain and upgrade the site as required. Plugins can cause conflicts and even updates can cause the standard themes to fall over. Without support don't consider Wordpress as a mission critical option, and make sure that support is available 24/7/365.
