Yes, there are SEO scammers out there and they discredit the industry but otherwise SEO is just like any other marketing activity. If you have clear objectives, a realistic budget and take the rudimentary steps necessary to evaluate your investment, whether that investment be in your own time or the cost of hiring professionals, you can generate great returns - we've demonstrated this time and again. What SEO is not is a panacea - anyone relying on it exclusively to solve all their marketing objectives is likely to be disappointed. But it should be a critically important part of an integrated online marketing plan encompassing content development, paid search for testing, XML feeds, social media, blogging, newsletters and so on.

Great post. Have been trying to learn a different language on the net but not having much success, considering going to a local course so this is useful, thanks.

Nice to hear a frank and honest post on this subject, really interesting.

I was much the same, although I had alot of design experience from briefing to final design I didn't have any actual business experience before starting Dot Design.

Every day I learn something new and valuable on some level that helps me business wise.

I've just developed a site for a charity in South Central Los Angeles (www.anewwayoflife.org - check it out ;-)), but they've told me they're getting some "social media experts" in to do all the Twitter/Facebook/YouTube stuff. Fine, I'm not precious and it's their site and I did it out of goodwill. They can get in whoever they like.

However, when the guy I gave the ftp details to called me to say he'd "cranked up Dreamweaver and couldn't work out which directory was the site's root", the alarm bells started ringing!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a co-operative kinda guy, but if he effs up my beautiful templates and CSS with his magic Dreamweaver I shall not be happy...

Just sayin'.

WAP was a massive disappointment. I just don't think that the world was ready for the mobile web.
I think the iPhone changed all that.

Thanks for the comment!

Helpful post—I'm glad you ran through it from WAP days because I remember the hype followed by inaction. But now does seem like an urgent time to act. BBC News is a great example of a mobile-only version of a complex site (and 4Networking.biz desperately needs one!) And Hotmail just made a revamped mobile version that is easier to use than their standard version.

Hey Olly,
Nice and easy to follow post with some good advice. I also agree with Mike that accessibility should be viewed as a common sense and best practice approach.
Awesome Olly!!!

Apart from the legal requirement, accessibility is common sense advice that many sites just don't follow. if a site is accessible, that means that it does what it's authors want it to do, sell a product, get an idea across or provide information. If you make things difficult for people to do, they won't do it. Why is Amazon so successful? Because it's simple.
